First, what is Edge Computing?
Before understanding Edge AI, it is helpful to first understand the concept of Edge Computing.
Edge Computing is the concept of servers capturing and processing data in physical proximity to the end user’s device (smartphone, PC, sensor, etc.).
Conversely, cloud computing sends data from end-user devices (smartphones, PCs, sensors, etc.) to the cloud via a network and processes it on servers in the cloud.
In other words, Edge Computing is a concept of “let’s not do too much processing and communication with the cloud, and let’s do it internally (on the Edge side)! In other words, Edge Computing is a concept of “let’s not do too much communication and processing with the cloud, and let’s do it in house (on the Edge)!
What is Edge AI?
Edge AI is a concept based on Edge Computing that utilizes AI on Edge devices and Edge servers.
The benefits are faster processing speeds and better security, since the process of communicating to the cloud, processing in the cloud, and receiving data is eliminated.
This is why it is being used in various fields, such as in-store systems in the retail industry, self-driving cars, and in factories in the manufacturing industry.
This is a 3-minute explanation of Edge AI.
